This program is a real blast from the past, when M.S.U. was called Michigan State College. The game was a good one, with Sparty winning 28-20, coming from behind in the second half.
The Spartans were new to the Big Ten, joining in 1950, and the year before the game, the team played its first full Big Ten schedule.
This was also Biggie Munn’s last game as a Spartan coach, and he went out in style.
The program is a little rough around the edges, with a few small tears on the front cover and a hunk out of the back cover (not such an important page anyway—which described the 1954 float winner (surprise!) Minute Maid Orange Juice.
This 69 year old program is mostly about the pageantry of the Rose Bowl, especially the floats. Six pages alone are dedicated to descriptions of the many floats in the order they appeared.
Page 29 highlights the 1954 Sparty roster with photos of Biggie Munn, Captain Don Mahoney, and running back Leroy Bolden.
The last inside page has an ad for Minute Maid Orange Juice, with a picture of Bing Crosby.
As you can see from the cover, the colors and graphics are bold.
If you are an M.S.U. football fan, even in these shaky times, this is a great keepsake of M.S.U.’s first Rose Bowl win.
