Do you provide transportation help to an older relative age 65+? (Hillsdale, MI)

We are seeking Hillsdale County residents who provide unpaid transportation assistance to a friend or family member age 65 or older to participate in a focus group in May.

Study Title: Helping Those Who Help Others: Development of the Transportation Assistance Burden Scale (TABS)

PIs: Colleen M. Peterson, PhD, and Renée M. St. Louis, PhD, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute

Study description: The purpose of the study is to learn about the diverse needs, resources, preferences, and perspectives of informal caregivers who provide unpaid transportation assistance to a family member or friend age 65 or older.

Eligible participants will be asked to attend one focus group session with up to seven other caregivers at a location in their community. At the focus group session, participants will complete a brief survey and participate in a group discussion regarding providing transportation assistance to an aging adult. The focus group session is expected to take approximately one hour.

Participants will be paid $50 for participating in the focus group session.

Participation criteria: Be age 18 or older; have a valid driver’s license; be the primary caregiver that provides informal (unpaid) transportation assistance to a friend or family member age 65 or older; have been providing the transportation assistance for at least 6 months; be willing to attend an in-person focus group with up to seven other people in the community.
